Brokaw FFA Members Compete in Soils Judging Competitions

Brokaw FFA members have recently competed in soils judging events at both the district level and state level. On Wednesday, October 1, 10 Brokaw members competed in the Southwest District Soils Judging contest held at Iowa Western Community College in Council Bluffs.
The team of Jill McCall, Dustin Sump, Laura Beaver, and Amanda McNees was the reserve champion team, as they placed 2nd out of 16 district teams. Sump was the overall district champion, with Beaver placing 6th and McNees placing 9th. The 2nd place finish qualified the team to compete at the Iowa FFA Soils Judging Career Development Event at Iowa State University on Saturday, October 11.
Other Brokaw members participating at district contest were: JJ Sunderman, Jenna Holt, Chantel King, Kam Hartstack, Austin Ascherl, and Blake McKinnon.
At the state contest, the team of McCall, Sump, Beaver, and McNees was named the reserve champion state team, as they placed 2nd out of 29 teams from across Iowa. McNees was the overall reserve champion individual, with Sump placing 4th.
This is the second consecutive year the Brokaw soils team was reserve champion at the state level. The 2nd place finish qualifies the team for the National Land and Range Judging contest in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, in May of 2009.
